Leland Stanford Junior University, or more commonly Stanford University, is a private research university in Silicon Valley. It is one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, with the highest undergraduate admissions selectivity.
Stanford was instrumental in the birth of Silicon Valley, and continues to drive its growth and technical advancement. Stanford engineering professor Frederick Terman acted as a mentor to many electronics pioneers, including William Hewlett, David Packard, and William Shockley. He is often called “the father of Silicon Valley.”
Many Silicon Valley companies (including Hewlett-Packard, Varian Associates, Cisco Systems, Yahoo!, and Google) were founded by Stanford students or alumni.
SRI International, which has been responsible for key advances in computing, was founded at Stanford.
